Arthur Cartlidge
Player #215 for Aston Villa, Arthur Cartlidge, played as a goalkeeper for the club.
Arthur played for Villa between 1908-09 and 1910-11 making 55 appearances.
Arthur was born in Hanley, Stoke on Trent on 12th June 1880 and made his debut appearance for Villa at the age of 28 on the 17th April 1909.
Villa had signed Arthur from Bristol Rovers in April 1909 and during his time with Villa was instrumental in the 1909-10 League title win making 35 appearances as Villa’s first choice keeper.
Arthur was the 24th custodian of the Villa goal in League and Cup football.
Arthur followed up the league success with 2nd place and in his time with Villa never finished below 7th in the table.
Over his 55 games for Villa, Arthur conceded 61 goals at an extraordinary average of just 1.11 goals per game. In comparison, Villa great Billy George achieved 1.23 (although over a far longer period).
Despite his talents, and the career of Villa’s legendary goalkeeper Billy George coming to an end, Arthur left Villa the following season with the emergence of Billy’s new heir apparent, Sam Hardy.
Arthur’s final game for Villa came at the age of 30 on 17th December 1910 after which he moved on to hometown team Stoke City.
Arthur played under the George Ramsay led Management Committee.
Arthur passed away in Stoke-on-Trent in August 1940 aged 60.
