Then Villa boss Steve Bruce had signed Bolasie from Everton on loan to the end of the 2018-19 Football League Championship season, joining on 25 August 2018, but he opted to leave on 21 January 2019.

Bolasie made his debut appearance for Villa at the age of 20 on Saturday, 15 September 2018 as a substitute in the 1-1 draw with Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park.

Bolasie’s first 11 appearances came as a substitute, with 5 of those coming under Steve Bruce before his dismissal. Bolasie scored twice for Villa under Bruce, including in his final game as Villa boss - the 3-3 draw with Preston North End on Tuesday, 2 October 2018.

Whilst newly installed Villa boss Dean Smith continued to bring Bolasie into games as a substitute he could not provide either assists or goals for the team however once promoted to a starter he created the opening goal for John McGinn in Villa’s 3-0 win at Derby County and followed that up with assists against Nottingham Forest (for Tammy Abraham) and at Middlesbrough (for Abraham once again) in another 3-0 victory for Villa.

Bolasie would make seven starts for Villa under Dean Smith and would add one more assist - again for Tammy Abraham - in the 1-1 draw with Preston North End on Saturday, 29 December 2018.

After three more appearances, one as a substitute, Bolasie called it a day with Villa as Dean Smith described, “I spoke to Yannick after the game on Saturday and again on Sunday, he feels as though he’s a little bit off where he wanted to be.”

“He probably needed a little bit more sprint work and felt that it was in his best interests to go back to Everton.”

“He’s a great lad and he’s created some assists for us, but probably didn’t impact the games over 90 minutes as much as he would have liked, and we all would have liked.”

“We must remember that he came here after an ACL operation and was looking to regain his fitness, which he’s got now, and he’s building up his body and managing his body to get ready for games.”

“We wish him well for the future, but we have to move on to our future now.”

“He’s a good lad and I’ll miss him around the place because he was a really good character, but that’s what happens in football.”

“He felt that it was time to go back and try and push his way into the Premier League.”
