Stan Crowther
Player #454 for Aston Villa, Stanley Crowther, known as Stan Crowther, played as a midfielder for the club in the wing half position.
Stan played for Villa in 1956-57 and 1957-58 making 62 appearances and scoring 4 goals.
Stan was born in Bilston, just 11 miles from Villa Park, on 3 September 1935 and made his debut appearance for Villa on Saturday, 29 September 1956 aged 21.
Villa had signed Stan from Bilston Town for a fee of £750 in August 1955.
During his short time with Villa Stan won the 1957 FA Cup with the victorious 1956-57 FA Cup campaign including the 2-1 triumph over Manchester United in the final held at Wembley Stadium in front of a crowd of 99,225 when Peter McParland scored twice to win Villa the Cup for a record seventh time.
Disappointingly however Stan was to leave the Villa for Manchester United as they went on a hiring spree following the Munich air disaster that decimated the United squad with Stan being signed just hours before his new team - and he - were due to kick off against Sheffield Wednesday in the FA Cup.
Stan played his final game for Villa on Saturday, 8 February 1958 aged just 22 before United paid £18,000 for his services, a tidy profit after just 3 years with the club and a £750 investment but it was no coincidence that the following season, a below strength Villa squad was relegated.
For Stan the immediate future was also uncertain. Despite Manchester United’s large outlay he was soon on the move again, this time to Chelsea in December 1958 for £10,000 where we remained for 3 seasons without making a great impact.
Whilst Villa returned to the top flight and new boss Joe Mercer bled a new raft of youngsters into the Villa team, Stan’s career became nomadic and he quit the game in 1962 still only 27 allegedly disillusioned with life was a footballer.
An unnecessary waste yet had Stan remained with Villa, Vic Crowe would not have had his second chance and the club would have lost a true legend, both as a player and a manager, that Stan’s rival became.
Stan had played his Villa career under manager Eric Houghton.
Stan passed away in Wolverhampton on 28 May 2014 aged 78.
