ON THIS DAY

Saturday, 21 January 1967

  • Villa lose after conceding three in eleven second half minutes to an unimpressive 5th place Chelsea side.

  • Villa take the lead as Barry Stobart scores his third goal in two League games after his eight month ostracism from the first team. But it’s the player who often kept him out of the reckoning, Tony Hateley, who does the damage for his new club in his typically unsophisticated style. Villa sit 18th and are now just four points clear of the relegation places.

  • Dick Taylor's wildly inconsistent Villa lose for the second time in three to make it nine wins, three draws and fourteen defeats in twenty six League games so far this season after recently departed Villa centre forward Tony Hateley, made captain for the day by his new club, scored an equalising goal to set up Villa's latest defeat.

  • Meanwhile, 20 year old midfielder Willie Anderson made his Villa debut after moving from Manchester United for a fee of £20,000.
