Tommy Barber scores Villa's first goal of the season as they are held at home on the opening day but the game and opening to the 1913-14 season is totally overshadowed by the "abritrary", "astounding", "ungenerous" actions of the Council of the Football Association who suspended Harry Hampton alongside Sunderland's Thompson for "incidents in the Cup final tie at Crystal Palace" the previous season, a move that met with "almost unanimous condemnation".
Hampton, at the edict of the FA, suspend Hampton for the entire month of September causing him to miss the opening five games of Villa's League season.
Including the end of the 1912-13 campaign Villa are now unbeaten in seven games.
