Villa Career Form:
Relegation
What they Said
โI want to begin with an apology to all Aston Villa fans for my actions in recent weeks, especially at a time when it is devastating for everyone involved with the club
โI am stepping down as club captain with immediate effect as I do not deserve to carry out such a role anymore. This role was a huge honour to me and it hurts to have lost it.
โI have spent 16 years at Aston Villa and played some memorable games. My celebrations and passion, especially in games against local rivals, shows my loyalty to Aston Villa. I am asking Aston Villa fans for forgiveness as Iโm hurting as well despite reports and photos in the press making out otherwise.
โI agree my performances this season have not been good enough but I will be working hard to make things right! Up The Villa, Villa Till I Die!โ
Gabriel Agbonlahor.
โWith Gabby the investigation is ongoing. Gabby should be [completed] in the next day or so, it wonโt put him in the frame for Saturday.โ
Eric Black on Gabriel Agbonlahor.
โNobody has come and spoken to me about it โ they are professional footballers and have to put up with things which are difficult. I have to focus on getting them ready to play. Itโs not an easy time for the club.โ
Eric Black on reports Jores Okore has refused to play.
โOn Monday a lot of people around and close to the first team were told they might not be in employment,โ he said. โSo thatโs had a real personal effect on everybody around and about the club โ and at the training ground especially.
โIโm not saying we should have any sympathy with the players in any shape or form but one or two have said to me how difficult this has become for some people at the club.
โNow the human element has kicked in and it makes the experience a lot harder to stomach.โ
Eric Black on the impact of relegation.
โThe players have been criticised, and justifiably so, but not today. Ultimately of course you need to win games but there was a lot to be encouraged by.
โItโs a fantastic football club with fantastic supporters and maybe itโs just one little step towards getting the supporters back on side.
โI thought the effort of the players was outstanding, they showed desire and hunger but the sending-off changes the whole context of the game.
โAt 2-1 up, I thought we looked like the team who were going to score again. The key moment is the sending off.โ
Eric Black, Saturday, 30 April 2016.
A late double from Troy Deeney handed Watford a dramatic 3-2 win over already-relegated Aston Villa in the Premier League on Saturday.
The Birmingham City fan scored in the 90th and 93rd minute against 10-men Villa to hand Watford all three points despite a much-improved show from the Premier Leagueโs bottom side.
Villa took the lead just before the half-hour mark through Ciaran Clarkโs strong header from a corner, before Almen Abdi equalised with a superb free-kick on the stroke of half-time.
But Villa regained the lead three minutes after the break through Jordan Ayewโs fine finish from 20 yards, though the visitors had to play the final stages with 10 men after Aly Cissokhoโs dismissal before Deeneyโs late double.
The result leaves Watford in 12th place on 44 points, handing them only their second league win in nine games, while Villa have now lost their last 11 league games, equalling an unwanted club record.
Watford made four changes from the side that lost 2-1 to Crystal Palace in the FA Cup semi-final last weekend, while Villa made three, handing teenage defender Kevin Toner his first start.
After a slow start, Mark Bunn saved well down low from Odion Ighaloโs effort from an acute angle on the left, before Ben Watsonโs fine touch and volley from 30 yards hit the crossbar.
Villa took the lead moments later through Republic of Ireland defender Clark, who got a good connection on Ashley Westwoodโs drilled corner to head into the ground and past Heurelho Gomes.
The visitors were nearly 2-0 up minutes before the break through Ayew, who saw his diving header from 12 yards come off the near post and clear, but Watford were soon level.
After winning the free-kick from Idrissa Gueyeโs foul, Abdi curled the ball into the bottom left corner from 25 yards past the dive of Bunn.
Villa were ahead again on 48 minutes, Ayew converting into the bottom left corner from 20 yards after a fine one-two with Rudy Gestede on the edge of the box.
Gestede should have made it 3-1 moments later, but blazed over the bar from 12 yards after Westwoodโs lay-off, while at the other end Clark cleared Deeneyโs header from a corner off the line.
Eric Blackโs Villa came close twice in quick succession through Tonerโs header and Gestedeโs blocked shot, but they were reduced to 10 men after Cissokhoโs cynical last-man foul on Ikechi Anya.
They looked to have held on until the 90th minute, when Deeney got in between Villaโs centre-backs to glance a header into the bottom left corner from Steven Berghuisโ right-wing cross.
And Deeney, who scored in the return fixture at Villa Park, won it for Watford with a fine curling finish into the bottom corner as the ball broke to him on the edge of the area.
