  • Villa slump to defeat against Wolves and now are just one point clear of the drop zone to leave them with just six wins in twenty four Premier League games under Gérard Houllier.

  • Gérard Houllier's woeful reign continued as he presides over Villa's first loss to second from bottom Wolves at Villa Park in 31 years to leave Villa just one point above the relegation places.

  • Even in the darkest days of David O'Leary and the insipid return of Graham Taylor, Villa had never reached the levels of abject failure that Houllier had delivered.

  • Of course a more competent Villa hierarchy would have dismissed Houllier before the turn of the year - or preferably never been so foolish as to appoint him - but with their misguided pride clearly of greater importance to them than competency, Houllier was allowed to continue his destruction of Villa that precipitated a half decade of failure.

  • Nigel Reo-Coker makes his 100th start in a Villa shirt (116 Appearances) to make it W52 D30 L34, 3 Goals, 5 Assists, 22 Bookings and 1 Red Card so far in his Villa career.

  • Marc Albrighton makes his 25th start in a Villa shirt (37 Appearances) to make it W14 D8 L15, 6 Goals, 7 Assists, 4 Bookings and 1 Red Card.

  • Villa are without the suspended duo James Collins and Richard Dunne who were also fined for a drunken fracas during a player bonding break with staff members left behind by Houllier and McAllister. The staff members avoided censure.

“I would say I share their [the crowd’s] frustrations.

“They’re not happy with me, I’m not happy with what we’re doing at the moment. The boys tried hard, played well, created enough chances.

“I try not to think about it but just reassure them, I know what I’m doing.”

Gérard Houllier

“I speak to Randy on a regular basis and I speak also to Paul [Faulkner, the chief executive] at least once every day, so we are very close and very tight together. We know what we are going through and we know that we need the forces of everybody. And I think the team knows that. It's important to be in a club where there is strong belief and trust in them.

“If someone is not with us and is not giving more than 100%, he's got to leave because he won't make it.

"[But] I think we are all right. The spirit is good, we know where the land lies; we're not lying to ourselves, we are in relegation battle."

"That is absolutely untrue [suggestions that he has implemented a new code of conduct in the wake of the fracas involving Richard Dunne and James Collins]. You can even ask the players.

“I didn't mention anything even after the incident [with Dunne and Collins].

“Regarding the mobile phones, I spoke about this the first day I came and that was it. They're very reasonable because there is no mobile phone used in the changing room and I don't go and check. And I've never put a fine on a player who's been late. I hate fines. The second thing is that the set of rules is something that was given by the PFA [Professional Footballers' Association]. I was not even aware of that. And it was given before the Bolton game [on 5 March] because they needed to make a change because they needed the doctor's name and his mobile number."

Gérard Houllier continues to behave like an over-officious office manager.

"When my marines put on their uniforms and the emblem of the corps and went into battle and things got tough, they did not fight for their commander, they fought for their brothers-in-arms, the men wearing their uniform and emblem.

"When a player puts on a kit and wears the club badge, I would expect the same. We have very good lads who know how to play with passion. We have all seen them do it and have cheered them on. They are professionals who have given 110% in many games.

"What we need now is to quit pointing fingers and everyone look at the claret and blue of our kit and the badge they are wearing and go out and kick the crap out of the next teams we play until the end of the season!.”

Villa non-executive director General Charles Krulak.

"Our best chance of staying up is with Gérard."

Villa CEO Paul Faulkner.

"We have eight games ahead of us now and never mind what has happened in the past. This is our league and the eight games ahead are vital for our future.

"Everybody is concerned because we are not dreamers. There is a new league starting up for us of eight games and the mood is positive.

"A lot of players are internationals so they have that experience and they know what pressure is. I also know their personalities and they want to do well for the fans and the club.

"I can really share the fans' frustration and anxiety. But their influence is so important for us, especially at this stage of the season. They are fantastic supporters and, with their support, they can be the 12th man every game."

Gérard Houllier.

"Of course. I don't see why people would react so extremely and expect differently. I haven't seen anything in Gérard's body language that suggests he is losing faith. It's been a bitterly disappointing day [against Wolves]. But nothing's changed. We remain committed to the same long-term strategy.

"It's important we show unity from the boardroom to the management, from the terraces to the players."

Anonymous Villa board member.

🟩 12 Apr 2025, Villa 3-0 Southampton, St Mary's TBL.png

*Wolves claimed their first win at Villa Park for over three decades to boost their survival hopes and add to Aston Villa’s relegation concerns.*

The visitors had already seen two first-half efforts disallowed when Matt Jarvis drove home emphatically from a Christophe Berra knock-down.

Ashley Young shuddered the bar late on from Jean Makoun’s slotted pass but Villa were otherwise poor.

Jarvis might have doubled Wolves’ lead but Jamie O’Hara failed to feed him.

Even so, nothing could take the gloss off a victory that ended 31 years of Villa Park hurt for Wolves, who remain third from bottom but move to within a point of their local rivals with this result.

The Villa support were quick to voice their disapproval at Gerard Houllier, the club’s embattled manager, and the chorus of derision that greeted the final whistle threatened to drown out the triumphant roar from the away section.

But nothing could dull the joy of a Wolves side who made light of their tag as the Premier League’s worst travellers.

This was only the second time Mick McCarthy’s side had won on the road all season, but they began the afternoon on a wave of momentum created by a three-game unbeaten streak and rode it beautifully to extend that encouraging run.

There were mitigating circumstances for Villa, who - with Richard Dunne, James Collins and Luke Young ruled out by injury, and Ciaran Clark serving a two-match ban - were missing a quartet of senior defensive personnel.

Chris Herd, a 21-year-old Australian making his first Premier League start, was deployed at right-back and the makeshift look of the home defence clearly encouraged Wolves to believe that a first victory at Villa Park since March 1980 was within their grasp.

In the initial stages, no one embodied that conviction more than Adam Hammill.

The livewire winger caused left-back Nathan Baker all manner of problems for the first half hour, setting up Nenad Milijas for an early strike on goal before himself testing keeper Brad Friedel.

Further warning shots were fired across the Villa bows when Wolves had two goals disallowed in quick succession.

The first came when Berra headed home from an offside position, the second when a Jarvis cross was somewhat contentiously adjudged to have gone out of play before Kevin Doyle headed home at the far post.

Houllier, who has presided over just six league wins since his appointment last September, clearly did not like what he was seeing, and with 33 minutes gone Baker was withdrawn in favour of Fabian Delph.

However, as Jarvis demonstrated in clinical fashion, the Villa defence was in need of more wholesale remedial work.

O’Hara floated a right-wing free-kick into the box and when Berra beat Carlos Cuellar to the header, Jarvis gleefully thumped the ball beyond Friedel and in off the post for his fourth league goal of the season.

Villa’s best work came along the flanks, from where Young and Marc Albrighton sent in several teasing deliveries, but a Wolves defence superbly marshalled by Richard Stearman was equal to whatever came its way.

On one of the few occasions when the home side did create a clear first-half opening, the returning Makoun made a complete dog’s breakfast of Stewart Downing’s clipped centre, heading wide from six yards out.

The home support were unimpressed when Houllier sent on Robert Pires and Gabriel Agbonlahor on the hour, and their misgivings proved well-founded.

The double substitution had little impact beyond a cushioned header from Pires from which Cuellar sent a fine opportunity blazing over.

Nevertheless, the home side came within a whisker of equalising through Young, whose high, driven shot from Makoun’s precise through-ball left the crossbar shuddering.

A draw, however, would have been harsh on a Wolves side who carried the fight to their opponents and fully deserved local bragging rights.
