ON THIS DAY
A polarised season came to a close and John Gregory’s fascinating, thrilling, entertaining boom or bust style had been seen in full effect. Although not creative geniuses 1998 Villa were virtually unbeatable and able to win against any opposition in any circumstances. 1999 Villa looked bereft and bewildered and firmly in relegation form. Even an end of season up-turn saw the polar opposite to the end of the season and Villa dropped back from 1st to 5th and then to 6th at the last. There was never a dull moment under John Gregory.
Centre back Riccardo Scimeca made his final appearance for Villa aged 23 before moving on to Nottingham Forest for a fee of £4,050,000 in July 1999. Scimeca played for Villa between 1995-96 and 1998-99 making 96 appearances and scoring twice.
Grumpy full back Simon Grayson played his final game for Villa aged 28 before moving on to Blackburn Rovers for a fee of £750,000 in July 1999. Grayson made 63 appearances, scoring twice in his 2 seasons with the club.
