ON THIS DAY

Tony Barton's Villa lose for the first time this season as Peter Withe scores at both ends to make it two wins and one defeat in three League games.

The Loftus Road pitch however was the real man of the match. An artificial covering that all but the Rangers' players castigated. Newly promoted QPR had an entirely unmerited home advantage that threatened to engulf top flight football in controversy.

Meanwhile, Paul Rideout made his Villa debut aged 19 after moving from Swindon Town in June 1983 for a fee of £350,000.
