Villa play without their first choice defence, in a stadium they know nothing about, against a Kyiv side they have hardly seen but Tony Barton's men put in an excellent defensive performance to take a goalless draw back to Villa Park in the European Cup quarter final.

ON THIS DAY
Tony Barton's Villa secure an excellent goalless draw in the away leg at the Dynamo Stadium to leave it all to play for in the European Cup third round second leg at Villa Park despite problems surrounding the tie. Barton had formally protested to the Soviet Football Federation about the hotel accommodation after the team was unexpectedly denied rooms in the plush Hotel Yalta and moved to a lesser establishment. Not only that but the game itself was played in Simferopol after Dynamo's own pitch was ruled out by a severe winter with Villa kept in the dark about the venue. On the field Allan Evans failed his fitness fight, with Colin Gibson also missing out.

MATCHDAY QUOTES
“They are buzzing at the moment. Our form has been coming back In the last couple of weeks and now Is the time to capitalise on it. We all know this a very important match for the club.”
Tony Barton, pre-match.
"It was a good honest performance, but we shan't know the real significance until after the second leg.
"There were times in the second half, when Kiev had us under pressure, when we were a little fortunate.
"But it was a marvellous defensive display and I thought Dennis Mortimer and Gordon Cowans were tremendous in midfield."
Tony Barton, post-match.
