Villa go from bad to worse as a fourth consecutive defeat dumps them to 19th in the table. The performance at the Hawthorns however was much improved.
Joe Mercer marks his 250th game in charge of Villa with a fourth successive loss for the first time this season and the first time since April 1963 when they lost nine on the bounce under Mercer. Despite scoring three away from home Villa to make it four wins, a draw and eight defeats in thirteen League games as another season of struggle looked unavoidable.
