 2006-07 Season Review

The dawning of a new era. A new owner in American billionaire Randy Lerner. A new manager in Martin O’Neill. A scarcely believable change in fortunes that seemed like dreamland compared to just 3 months earlier at the end of the soul destroying Ellis and O’Leary regime. Indeed such was the parlous state of the club that the capture of O’Neill was a genuine coup - a manager renowned for working miracles of motivation on relatively small budgets and drawing every last bit of talent from his players.

With that talent however came cautionary tales. A combustible temperament, chaotic management, a desire for total control and marginalising habits were traits the Villa faithful hoped the job would smooth out.

Given what was inherited 2006-07 was an archetypal transitionary season and much of the business and team selection was done on a short term basis as O’Neill looked to instil his values into the team. His chosen replacements To achieve this O’Neill recruited trusted lieutenants from his time in Scotland with Celtic such as the fabulous Stilian Petrov plus Didier Agathe, Shaun Maloney and Chris Sutton as well as the fresh, exciting talents of Ashley Young and John Carew.

An 11th place finish was a significant improvement on the previous season but wasn’t the immediate return to the trophy winning glory days that some had hoped. A foundation however was being set.

Villa started the season well losing just one of their first 14 league games but followed that with a 12 game run from November to January without recording a win that put paid to any hope of a top 10 finish despite putting in a 9 game unbeaten run, winning 4, to the end of the season.

Such were the vagaries of the season that Villa lost the same number of games as 3rd placed Liverpool but finished 11th due to the number of draws (17 - the highest in the division).

More tellingly however was the sight of new Villa legends being made - Stiliyan Petrov, John Carew, Ashley Young - providing the commitment, excitement and potential to join the ranks of celebrated players Olof Mellberg and Martin Laursen.

Match Report

On this day 19 May 2006

Midfielder Lee Hendrie made his final appearance for Villa aged 29 before moving on to Sheffield United on a free transfer in June 2007. Hendrie had played for Villa between 1995-96 and 2006-07 making 307 appearances, 65 as substitute, and scoring 31 goals. In truth for his undoubted talent, Hendrie should have achieved much more at Villa but his off field distractions prevented him realising his potential, causing him to leave the club well ahead of schedule.
Eric Djemba-Djemba made his final appearance in a Villa shirt aged 25 before moving on to Qatar SC on a free transfer in July 2007. Villa had paid Manchester United £2,290,000 for Djemba-Djemba and he remained with Villa between 2004-05 and 2006-07. Over those 3 seasons Djemba-Djemba made 11 appearances, 7 as substitute.

Match Report

On this day 10 September 2006
Bulgarian international midfielder and Villa legend Stiliyan Petrov made his debut aged 27 after joining from Celtic for £9,000,000 in August 2006. Martin O’Neill’s first signing for the club was also one of the greatest, most influential players to pull on claret and blue both on and off the pitch.
