 2004-05 Season Review

An odd season. After the positivity of the run to the end of the 2003-04 campaign that secured O’Leary’s Villa a 6th placed finish hopes were high for the new campaign that a rejuvenated squad and some fresh faces would mount another top 6 challenge.

In reality the season never got going with critical defeats occurring through the opening fixtures developing into full blown losing runs as the season wore on. There was also no solace to be provided by the Cups this season and the first concerns about O’Leary’s management soon surfaced.

There were some positive elements however - the size and average age of the squad continued to fall - down from 35 players under Taylor to 24 this season with an average age of 24.5 years old, down from 26.2 the previous year.

The signing of Danish centre back Martin Laursen brought a fresh Villa legend to the club but equally one should recognise this was a period of few signings and those that were made, Laursen apart, were low quality and in some instances such low quality they became the Bert Kingaby, Nigel Callaghan and Gary Penrice of the current era.

Eric Djemba Djemba, the player so bad they named him twice - *Vaclav Drobny*, *Mathieu Berson* and *Carlton Cole* aren’t players looked on as a high point in Villa’s recruitment history.

Taken all together then there is little surprise that Villa fell back - although dropping just 4 places to 10th in the Premier League - the true gulf was much more pronounced and after just 12 months at the club but David O’Leary’s days of support were already numbered.

A manager quick to criticise his own club and players who seemed to increasingly distance himself from responsibility or accountability and who had an apparently short term view of player potential meant destabilisation - at times seemingly wilful - became the de facto management tactic of O’Leary in his second season.

The season itself started reasonably well with three wins and two defeats in the first ten games - although both of those saw Villa ship 3 goals. Villa then went on their best run of the season by going unbeaten for five league games and winning four however during that period Villa were dumped out of the League Cup.

That however was as good as it got and O'Leary's Villa won just one of the next eight league games, were beaten by lower league opposition in the third round of the FA Cup and posted just 4 wins in seventeen games to the end of March.

Form recovered somewhat as the team went unbeaten for 5 games, winning 2 but a run of 3 successive defeats to the end of the season saw Villa finish 10th with the club clearly going backwards under the divisive management of O'Leary.
