 2003-04 Season Review

After the disaster of the Second Coming of Graham Taylor, Villa definitely needed a lift and whilst he wasn’t the most universally popular personality in english football - new manager David O’Leary - fresh from a dynamic spell in charge of Leeds United offered an antidote to the previous two seasons.

Often overlooked now, O’Leary’s rejuvenation and improvement of the squad played immediate dividends - not least the resurgence of Juan Pablo Ángel, a player ostracised by Taylor but once again becoming leading scorer and talisman for Villa in the new era.

A 6th placed finish and run to the League Cup Semi Final left the debacle of the previous 18 months long forgotten.

However it didn't start well - no win in the first three and 2 away losses suggested another challenging season could be expected. That turned to one win in five and then two wins in twelve as Villa languished in 18th place in late November.

The run to the end of year however saw an improvement with O'Leary's Villa posting four league wins in six games and a berth in the League Cup Semi Final. Villa were up to 10th in the table. But yet again the New Year brought in a change of form and fortune and Villa lost 4 out of the first 5 games of 2004, exiting the FA Cup at the first hurdle and losing the League Cup Semi Final to a lowly Bolton Wanderers side.

Almost as soon as the hope for a trophy was extinguished so Villa's form returned with wins of 5-0 and 4-0 away from home the highlights as they went on to win 8 of the final 16 games, losing just 3, as Villa's season came good with a 6th place finis.
