 1995-96 Season Review

At half time of the opening game of the season you got the feeling this was going to be a special season. With our boy Brian in charge, a dynamic style of play, youth throughout the team and 3-0 up against Manchester United it probably wasn't a time for rational judgement. But it was a perfect time for instinct. And that instinct was absolutely correct.

Villa were back to where they had been in 1992-93 under Ron Atkinson but crucially the squad was younger, more athletic and contained more than a few surprises for the opposition.

The first 5 games brought 3 wins and a draw with Villa sitting pretty in 3rd place. With 10 games gone, Villa were 2nd but home and away defeats to Chelsea and Arsenal respectively caused a stutter, a stutter that was soon dispatched with a 5 game unbeaten run winning 4 and climbing back to 4th having dropped as low as 7th place.

Two more league defeats bookended another unbeaten run with Villa now 6th and through to the League Cup Quarter Final.

Villa lost just once in 14 games from the turn of the year to consolidate 4th place as well as progress into the League Cup final after vanquishing Arsenal over two legs and into the FA Cup Quarter Final.

Such was Villa's stranglehold on 4th that they did not relinquish that place to the end of the season however a late season run of reversals - no win in 4 and 3 defeats - meant Villa couldn't breach the top three. That however was less of an issue given the superlative performance Villa had but in to win the League Cup final for the fifth time. Leeds United were simply humiliated at Wembley Stadium in certainly Villa's best ever final performance and potentially the greatest one-sided final in the competition's history.

Brian Little walked on water in 1995-96.

Little's football philosophy shone as an exciting Villa side regularly swept aside opponents and gave profile to a number of young players with great club and international careers ahead of them.

 1995-96 Managerial Record

Brian Little's second season as Villa boss saw the club rise to 4th in the Premier League and win the League Cup for the 2nd time in 3 seasons.

Little’s Villa had now achieved a win rate of 44%, losing 27% of their 81 League and Cup matches under his leadership.

As a result Little had returned 1.62 points per game* across his 81 games in charge of Villa. In doing so Little was level with Billy Smith’s 1.62 across 364 games and ahead of his predecessors Billy McNeill (1.05 in 42), Tommy Cummings (1.06 in 67), Tommy Doherty (1.20 in 55) Dick Taylor (1.23 in 146) and Villa’s first professional manager Jimmy McMullan (1.24 in 99), Jozef Vengloš (1.29 in 49), Eric Houghton (1.31 in 250), George Martin (1.42 in 119) and Joe Mercer (1.51 in 282), Ron Atkinson (1.53 in 180), Alex Massie (1.56 in 227), Tony Barton (1.56 in 137), Jimmy Hogan (1.59 in 124) and Graham Taylor (1.61 in 150). Little was however behind Vic Crowe (1.63 in 222), Ron Saunders (1.64 in 393) and George Ramsay’s performance of 1.69 across his 1,332 games.

*Rankings based on 3 points for a win, 1 point for a draw in all competitions
