 1990-91 Season Review

It took 4 games to deliver the first win but from there Villa's form under new boss Jozef Vengloš soared.

Although it was still painful to have lost Graham Taylor just 3 years into his project to turn Villa into a trophy winning force once again and though the decision to appoint Vengloš as the first manager born outside Britain or Ireland to take charge of a top division club in England was a risk, a run of 1 loss in 13 games and 9 wins meant Villa continued the momentum of 1989-90 in the early months of the season.

Then came one of the most controversial nights in Villa's history, scandalous refereeing in the San Siro gifted Inter Milan an undeserved win in the UEFA Cup second round and that result alone seemed to derail all the work Villa had previously put in.

Villa would go on to win just six of the next thirty one games under Vengloš and relied on two consecutive games unbeaten at the end of the season to secure their top flight status.

Villa then had to settle for 17th place in a season that had initially promised so much and Vengloš would leave at the season end having impressed all with his integrity but who had not managed to galvanised an effective squad on the pitch.

The good news was that the last two appointments under Ellis had proved intelligent and somewhat daring, getting Taylor from Watford was, at the time, a bona fide coup, and the gamble on Vengloš showed at least the club was forward thinking. That Villa were no longer shopping in the bargain basement of Turner and McNeill was welcome indeed, the next appointment would indicate much about where Villa under Ellis were heading next.
