 1988-89 Season Review

The first 15 games of Villa's return to the top flight saw an excellent return with 7 wins including putting 13 without reply past neighbours Birmingham City across 3 cup matches. The league threw up some strong results too, beating Arsenal, Everton and Spurs, drawing away at Manchester United and taking a point of Liverpool.

The 6-0 hammering of Birmingham however presaged a run of 4 defeats including Villa's first loss to Coventry City since 1946. Villa bounced back with a 5 game unbeaten run and hit 6 again in a cup defeat of Ipswich but the return fixtures against Arsenal and Liverpool were less successful as Villa shipped 4, losing both games.

January to March 1989 brought a run of 12 games with just one win, losing 9 and being dumped out of both cups. The defeats were all tight, bar one, but the setback to Villa was significant and pressure hung over the last 7 games to ensure an immediate return to the second tier was avoided.

Villa responded, winning 2 and drawing 2 before a couple of defeats and a final day draw against Coventry - the first time Villa had failed to win against Coventry in a season since 1936-37.

Overall then Graham Taylor's second season as Villa boss and first in the top flight proved a challenging affair at times but a 17th place finish meant Villa's status was retained and a platform was in place for improvement.
