 1986-87 Season Review

Graham Turner's third and final season as Villa boss was over quickly, leaving the role after just 6 games - indeed it was something of a surprise that Turner had started the season given the sharp decline seen the previous season.

In the event of his departure however there was no immediate plan despite the decision being made early and the club was placed in the hands of a caretaker team whilst Chairman Doug Ellis searched for a replacement. Ellis's spotlight fell on Billy McNeill and the Scot was recruited to lead a depleted and disjointed squad following its mismanagement since Ellis' return.

Scarcely believably McNeill's Villa's record, reign and performances were even worse than under Graham Turner and the inevtiable consequence of Ellis' mismanagement came to fruition with Villa finishing bottom of Division One and relegated to Division Two just 5 years after being crowned Champions of Europe.

McNeill wasn't even to see out the season, leaving his post after the penultimate game before Frank Upton stepped in as caretaker.

4 management structures and Villa's worst ever finish in the top division were suitable summaries for the denoument of the Eliis regime.

The season itself was scarcely believable it was so bad. An opening 7 games brought 6 losses 0-3, 2-3, 0-1, 1-2, 0-6 and 1-4. Turner - responsible for 5 of those defeats including Villa's worst result since October 1964  was gone having been the architect of the inevitable relegation battle the season was to become.

Amongst the difficulties it is easy to forget that Turner's replacement Billy McNeill had a decent first 10 games, winning 6 and losing just 1. Those crucial points - 5 of the wins coming in the league - gave Villa hope through to November that McNeill could reverse the slide and keep Villa in the division.

What isn't easy to forget at all however is how bad things got from thereon and what an incredible false dawn McNeill's first 10 had actually been.

After that initial run, McNeill won just one more of 10 games in 1986 losing 5. That run however was nothing compared to 1987.

McNeill won just twice in 21 games, losing 11.

On this day 13 September 1986
Villa, under Graham Turner had now won just seven of their last 33 league games, losing 17 including this 6-0 embarrassment.

This was to prove Turner’s last game in charge of Villa as the senseless strategy of Herbert Doug Ellis, to prematurely and wilfully dismantle the league title and European Cup winning team, paid its inevitable dividends.
