 1984-85 Season Review

Even now it seems like some sort of sick joke, Doug Ellis appointed Shrewsbury Town manager Graham Turner as the replacement for European Cup winning Villa boss Tony Barton.

Turner's footballing record was to gain promotion from Division Three in 1978-79 as player manager, then to finish 13th in Division Two the following season, followed by 14th in the second tier in the season Villa were crowned league champions, 18th in Division Two as Villa were crowned European champions, 9th in Division Two as Villa finished 6th in the Division One and 8th in Division One in the season before he took over the reins at 7 times Champions, 7 times FA Cup winners and European champions Aston Villa.

Turner won the Welsh Cup in 1983-84 as his swan-song with Shrewsbury before joining Villa. Turner's cup success prior to that highlight was reaching the FA Cup Quarter Final in 1981-82. Yet Ellis saw something no-one else did. Sadly everyone else was right and not for the first time Ellis was seriously wrong.

Despite the folly of the appointment Turner managed to match Barton's 10th place finish of the previous season.

That headline however was a false picture - a team that had been crowned Champions of Europe just 3 seasons earlier were regularly beaten by heavy scorelines 0-3, 0-5, 0-3, 0-5, 0-3, 0-4, and failed to score in 18 of their 46 matches.

Villa were in a mess and one man was to blame, and it wasn't Graham Turner.
