 1983-84 Season Review

Villa made a stronger start to the season than in the previous campaign opening with two wins and ultimately winning 5 of their first 10 league games whilst losing 3. Over that period Villa also made a formidable start to their UEFA Cup run with a 5-0 home win over their first round opponents.

Form them was solid and a five game unbeaten run injected some confidence however two successive shock losses at home to Arsenal and UEFA Cup second round opponents FC Spartak Moscow set Villa back. Shipping 6 goals to Arsenal was not something Villa Park had been used to and credit to the team it triggered them into life losing just one in nine (a heavy reverse away to Notts County) whilst winning six.

Wins however became much harder to come by from January losing 5 in 8 and winning just once. That one victory however put Villa through to the League Cup Semi final but despite winning the home leg an away defeat to Everton put paid to a fourth trophy in four seasons.

Out of the three cup competitions then Villa could concentrate on improving their league standing but though they won 7 of the final 15 league games of the season they drew just one with regular defeats undoing the work done.

As a result Villa finished the season in 10th place, that relative disappointment however was not enough to prompt what was to happen next.

1983-84 was to prove to be Tony Barton's third and final season as Villa boss - the first season he hadn't lifted a trophy, this mastermind of Villa's most famous night was gone. It was far too soon. Regardless of whether Barton was a victim of his and Villa's own success or as is more widely believed Barton was the second managerial victim in three years of a pointless and unnecessary boardroom battle, the fact was Villa had lost a great man, a great servant of Villa and one of the most respected men to be connected with the boys on claret and blue.

His successor would have mighty shoes to fill. Crowe, Saunders and Barton would be tough acts to follow for any manager.

Something and someone special was needed to have any chance of succeeding - all eyes were on the boardroom - something that became all too familiar across the next two decades in Villa's history.
