 1982-83 Season Review

Opening the season with three defeats including a chastening five goal reversal - Villa's first since March 1976 - pointed to another challenging season following a trophy win. Yet Tony Barton's Villa were made of sterner stuff and immediately posted their response - five successive wins including a resounding victory over Beşiktaş as European Cup holders.

What was equally impressive was Villa going away to tough European venues and returning with solid draws to set up tie victories as was the case in the previous season's European Cup win. The post Europe hangover in the league also remained however as the flip side of running a small squad started to weigh heavy on a stretched fixture list.

Travelling to Tokyo in mid December for the Intercontinental Cup match against Peñarol ahead of a busy Christmas period typified the additional demands placed upon the squad and unsurprisingly results suffered. Villa won just once in December, losing 4 and brought new year 1983 in with another defeat.

Villa's January was centre around cup competitions with the European Super Cup against FC Barcelona taking centre stage and one of the great European nights at Villa Park saw a 0-1 deficit overturned by an exhilarating performance as Villa ran out 3-0 winners on the night to clinch their 3rd trophy in 3 seasons.

That victory proved a catalyst to improved domestic form for Villa - again centred on the cups as Villa progressed to the FA Cup Quarter Finals.

The return of the European Cup saw Villa suffer a surprise home defeat to Juventus leading to them needing to chase the game at the Stadio Comunale Vittorio Pozzo and losing the tie and falling out of the European Cup before the Semi Finals. Over the same period Villa were knocked out of the FA Cup at the quarter finals as their away form began to hurt.

Indeed Villa's league performance was largely built on their excellence at Villa Park, in fact Villa ended the season holding the best record in the League for home games, and was largely to thank for their ultimate 6th place finish and qualification for the following season's UEFA Cup.

Tony Barton's first full season as Villa boss then had seen the reigning Champions of Europe put in a much stronger league campaign - finishing 6th - but away form was a concern as was the departures of a number of key league title and European Cup winning players.

 1982-83 Managerial Record

Tony Barton's second season as Villa boss saw a 6th place finish in Division One thanks to Villa's excellent home form and a UEFA Super Cup win over FC Barcelona courtesy of one of Villa Park's 'great European nights'.

Barton’s Villa had now achieved a win rate of 49%, losing 35% of their 82 League and Cup matches under his leadership.

As a result Barton had returned 1.62 points per game* across his 82 games in charge of Villa. Barton was level with Billy Smith’s 1.62 across 364 games and was behind only George Ramsay’s performance of 1.69 across his 1,332 games, his predecessor Ron Saunders (1.64 in 393) and Vic Crowe’s (1.63 in 222).

Barton was however ahead of the rest of his predecessors including Tommy Cummings (1.06 in 67), Tommy Doherty (1.20 in 55) Dick Taylor (1.23 in 146), Villa’s first professional manager Jimmy McMullan (1.24 in 99) as well as Eric Houghton (1.31 in 250), George Martin (1.42 in 119), Joe Mercer (1.51 in 282), Alex Massie (1.56 in 227) and Jimmy Hogan (1.59 in 124).
