 1981-82 Season Review

The start to the season was a shock to the system for Villa after the title glory of the previous campaign. Defeats to lowly opposition set Villa back and the dreaded draws began to dominate once again - Villa went on a 14 game unbeaten run winning 8 however only 3 wins came in the league itself.

Villa began to make a habit of losing in threes either side of reasonable unbeaten runs, the wins continued but Villa's league form was being scuppered by the number of cup games being played. Eight of Villa's 16 games between October and December came in the cups as did 6 of their 9 wins.

Outside of the cups Villa had a poor December and January, losing 6 whilst winning just 2 league games. Villa were also knocked out of the League Cup at the Quarter final stage and 5th round of the FA Cup but they continued strongly in Europe reaching the 3rd Round of the European Cup in March as form recovered.  Amidst that 7 game unbeaten run Villa recorded 3 league wins - all in local derbies - but retaining the title looked out of reach.

By that point the club had suffered the surprise and sudden departure of legendary Villa boss Ron Saunders due to board room differences and he was replaced by a very different character, but no less successful leader, Tony Barton.

A 5 game winning run in April saw Villa vanquish Anderlecht in the European Cup semi final as well as 4 crucial league wins. Villa however lost 3 of their last 6 league games to finish a disappointing 11th place but their superb form in Europe carried them to the European Cup for the first time in their history.

The players had galvanised under the respected Tony Barton to be crowned Champions of Europe by famously beating Bayern Munich in Rotterdam just 12 months after lifting the English League title for the 7th time.
