 1979-80 Season Review

After the regular inconsistency and injury hit season of 1978-79 Villa needed to hit 1979-80 in a fitter, luckier and more solid fashion to post some positive results. It didn't work out that way, in their first 10 league games Villa won twice, lost 3 and drew 5, scoring 7. Over the same period Villa were dumped out of the League Cup in the third round.

But the on field troubles only told half the story - ongoing and seemingly perpetual boardroom struggles centred on the behaviour of Herbert Douglas Ellis created turmoil in the background whilst a significant turnover of high profile players and previous mainstays of the side meant Villa, with a suddenly under pressure manager, were very much in a transition - as much unexpected as it was unseamless.

That disappointing start seemed to trigger something in Villa and they went unbeaten in 8, and eventually lost just 3 in 25 games through to March 1980, winning 13, although goals were still at a premium throughout the season not least through March as Villa scored 3 in 6 games, losing 4. A brief unbeaten run was punctuated by occasional defeats to eventually leave Villa 7th in the top flight - their fourth consecutive season top 8 finish, but they were crying out for the missing piece of the jigsaw - an out of out goalscorer to turn those regular draws into wins.
