 1977-78 Season Review

Villa's second ever European campaign in the UEFA Cup saw them progress to the quarter final but not without its costs. Through to Christmas Villa won just twice in the league weekend after a European match, losing 3. Villa had played 8 cup matches by the time they had completed 17 league games, the squad was being stretched like never before.

That pressure began to tell, Villa won 6 in each of their first 2 lots of 10 games but then could only record 3 wins from game 21-30 and had been knocked out of the League Cup as holders.

By the new year, Villa were already out of the FA Cup and had lost 3 in 4 without recording a win. A two week break in competition in mid January came at a crucial time, Villa returned if not rejuvenated but refreshed. Two crucial wins bucked the losing trend but defeat home and away to Barcelona in the UEFA Cup quarter final and no league wins across that 5 game spell set Villa back again.

Villa however steadied and posted a 12 game run with just two losses and 7 wins, including 5 in a row. A final day defeat took the shine off the run but Villa had recovered to 8th in Division One and given they had reached the Quarter Final of the UEFA Cup in only their second European campaign, the season was a qualified success and essential experience in European comeptition was earned.
