 1976-77 Season Review

Villa's second season back in the top flight saw Saunders' men open with a resounding win and the first 10 games brought another 5 wins but 4 losses. The second ten saw Villa again post 6 wins but they suffered just one loss as the season's momentum started to build. Villa followed up with another 7 wins and despite 2 losses over the Christmas period were sitting pretty in the table and in the semi final of the League Cup yet again.

Villa's next set of 10 fixtures were dominated by cup fixtures with the Villa vanquishing QPR in the League Cup Semi finals at the second attempt, dispatching with Port Vale in the FA Cup fifth round, defeat in the FA Cup Quarter Finals and the first two of three finals against Everton to decide the winners of the 1977 League Cup.

Villa finally disposed of Everton to win their third League Cup amidst a flurry of wins. As had happened before however a Villa trophy win upset league form and Villa went on to lose 4 in 6 games before ending the season unbeaten in 3, hitting 4 without reply in their final game - the same score they had opened the campaign with.

The end result for Saunders' Villa was a strong 4th place and victory in the League Cup for the 2nd time in 3 seasons. Meanwhile Saunders set about further reducing the average age of the Villa squad - now it stood at just 22.4 years old as Villa built for the future,

Villa also chalked up another 100+ goal season, blitzing the 100 goals barrier for the 11th time. Villa scored a total of 105 league and cup goals. That placed 6th in Villa’s 11 100+ seasons in 1930-31 (131) 1928-29 (115) 1960-61 (112) 1974-75 (110) 1912-13 (106) 1976-77 1931-32 1929-30 (105) 1891-92 (102) & 1971-72 1893-94 (100)
