 1975-76 Season Review

Villa's first season back in the top flight after eight seasons away took a little time to adjust to, in the early games Villa conceded 5 goals for the first time in the 1970s and although there were wins throughout the season extended spells without a win meant Saunders' men finished 16th and well off the pace.

1975-76 also saw Villa embark on their first ever European campaign, that however lasted just one round as Villa's inexperience saw them eliminated at the first hurdle.

That apart it was a subdued campaign, although some fella nicknamed Sid rocked up.

Match Report
"Kodat hat-trick shatters Villa"

On this day 17 September 1975
Villa’s first ever European fixture ended in a disappointing defeat

Goalkeeper Jim Cumbes made his final appearance for Villa before moving on to Portland Timbers in March 1976. Jim played for Villa between 1971-72 and 1975-76 making 183 appearances and conceding 173 goals at a rate of just 0.95 goals per game. Those figures made Jim the most successful ‘keeper to have ever kept goal for Villa of the 23 players who had made 25 or more appearances as goalkeeper for the club.
