 1974-75 Season Review

Looking back it was almost like he walked in and said "enough, let's get promoted, but you all need to be younger, and you need to score 100, and let's add a cup win and then we can get started properly".

Vic Crowe had done an excellent job, this though, this was another level.

The reality though was a little different, only a little mind. The season opened with a succession of Villa's dreaded draws before Hull were put to the sword. That however was a false dawn as a smattering of losses spoiled the first eight games however by then Villa had vanquished Everton to progress in the League Cup and embark on a strong unbeaten run through to November.

After 18 games Villa had lost just twice and recorded 9 wins but November started badly with 3 losses in 4 games as Villa's season threatened to falter. Villa's form continued to wobble to the turn of the year but by that point they had secured their place in another League Cup semi final and hit 6 and 4 along with some narrower wins amongst the setbacks.

1975 however was to prove very different, Villa lost just once in the league between January and the end of the season, recording 19 wins including an 8 game winning streak ahead of their return to Division One.

Villa had simply stormed to 2nd place in Division Two to win promotion back to the top flight of English football after 8 years away - their longest ever spell without top flight football.

Saunders also engineered Villa's second League Cup win in one of the most memorable Villa seasons of all time and blitzed the 100 goals in a season barrier for the 10th time. Villa scored a total of 110 league and cup goals. That placed 4th in Villa’s 10 100+ seasons in 1930-31 (131) 1928-29 (115) 1960-61 (112) 1974-75 (110) 1912-13 (106) 1931-32 (105) 1929-30 (105) 1891-92 (102) & 1971-72 1893-94 (100).

Not content with his stunning on-field success Saunders also set about lowering the average of the Villa squad which was now just 23.3 years old.

Villa were back and they weren't to be messed with.
