 1972-73 Season Review

The season kicked off bizarrely with a Charity Shield match against Manchester City, once out of the way however Villa could concentrate on their first season back in the second tier for 3 years and they made a decent start of it. Villa's first 10 league games brought 7 wins and just one defeat.

By the turn of the year and after 29 games, Villa had lost just 4 league fixtures and a second successive promotion push was on the cards.

The second half of the season saw 5 league losses in 18 games but that was enough - along with Villa's propensity to draw games -  to rule them out of automatic promotion.

Villa's then had to settle for a third placed finish in their first season back in Football League Division Two missing out on automatic - and back to back promotions - to Division One by just one place. In truth however Villa finished well short of 2nd place nevertheless Crowe's team had now won 50 league games in the last two seasons.

1973-74 was looking promising already.

Match Report

"Poser for Villa: Who will take Bruce Rioch's midfield place"

On this day 19 August 1972

Although early days Villa sat on top of the Second Division - the only team to have not conceded and to have a 100% win record. Indeed Villa had started the season brightly, an unlucky defeat in the Charity Shield against higher league opposition, two solid league wins and a demolition of lower league opposition in the League Cup.
Right back Mick Wright made his final appearance for Villa aged just 25. Wright played for Villa between 1963-64 and 1972-73 making 318 appearances and scoring once and was well on his way to being a record appearance holder when injury struck, ending his career. Earlier in his career Wright had a penchant for transfer requests as struggling Villa fell down the leagues however his was a crucial role in Villa's dominating season of 1971-72 and hopes remained that he could replicate his form at a higher level before his injury struck.
