 1971-72 Season Review

Villa's second successive season in the Third Division started as an almost carbon copy of the first, 10 games, 6 wins, 1 loss, and passage to the League Cup third round already secured.

The next 15 games threw up 7 wins but Villa were dumped out of the League Cup in the fourth round and for successive season exited the FA Cup in the first round. Villa's league form saw 4 losses and 6 wins but momentum had stalled and a similar pattern to 1970-71 was taking shape.

Ironically, where the League Cup final had proved the catalyst for the poor run to the end of the previous season, it was Villa's first round FA Cup exit that kick started the season once again. Villa immediately recorded their biggest win since '64 and went on to win 22 of their 29 games to the season end, losing just three, scoring 55 and conceding just 14.

Villa's finished the season as Third Division champions winning promotion to Division Two after two seasons away.

Vic Crowe's team had simply stormed the division from November, winning 32 games and blitzing the 100 goals in a season barrier for the 9th time. Villa scored a total of 100 league and cup goals. That placed the 1971-72 campaign 9th in Villa's 9 100+ seasons behind 1930-31 (131) 1928-29 (115) 1960-61 (112) 1912-13 (106) 1931-32 (105) 1929-30 (105) 1891-92 (102) and level with 1893-94 (100).

Villa were on a march and legends were being born as Jimmy Cumbes, Ray Graydon, Brian Little, Ian Ross, Chris Nicholl all made their debuts.
