 1970-71 Season Review

Wins. And lots of them. This was more like it. It may have been the third tier but Villa boss Vic Crowe was putting a smile back on the face of the fans.

Villa's first 10 games brought 7 wins and passage into the third round of the League Cup, their second ten saw Villa beaten just once but 5 draws stalled momentum as Villa reached the fifth round of the League Cup for the first time since 1965-66.

Villa went on to post their biggest win since September 1965 to round out October but soon after Villa's form began to falter with 3 losses in 5 across November. The last defeat in that run saw Villa dumped out of the first round of the FA Cup for the first time since 1926-27.

Villa recovered however to secure a League Cup semi final and in a strong run through to new year 1971 saw a 6 game unbeaten run including 4 wins and a 2 legged victory over Manchester United to reach their 3rd League Cup final.

The New Year game however brought Villa's first ever league game versus Walsall and a heavy defeat - Villa's first a the hands of their near neighbours.

Villa continued adding wins but defeats came more regularly including defeat in the League Cup final against Tottenham Hotspur.

That distraction seemed to derail Villa's season and the run to the end of the season saw just 3 more wins in the final 15 putting paid to any chance of automatic promotion with Villa eventually finishing 4th - their lowest ever league placing.

 1970-71 Managerial Record

Vic Crowe's second season as manager saw Villa finish 4th in Division Three and just miss out on promotion back to the second tier.

Crowe’s Villa had now achieved a win rate of 40%, losing 30% of their 73 League and FA Cup matches under his leadership.

As a result Crowe had returned 1.49 points per game* across his 73 games in charge of Villa. Vic Crowe however was behind Joe Mercer (1.51 in 282), Alex Massie (1.56 in 227) Jimmy Hogan (1.59 in 124), Billy Smith’s 1.62 across 364 games and George Ramsay’s performance of 1.69 across his 1,332 games.
