 1966-67 Season Review

Dick Taylor's third season as Villa manager saw Villa relegated to Division Two after finishing in 21st place. It was also, unsurprisingly, Taylor's final season in charge.

In truth, Villa's third relegation in 30 years was seemingly inevitable after just 10 games. Villa under the later Mercer years and then Taylor had made a habit of losing with alarming regularity. Taylor in 1966 however took this to new levels and the defeats were as heavy as they were damaging, 1-6, 2-6, 0-5, 1-5, 1-6.

Ironically it was but the turn of the year and when the defeats became narrower that relegation became an almost certainty. Even the odd comfortable win couldn't prompt a recovery and a 9 game run without a win, 7 defeats, conceding 24 to the season end was a fitting denouement to an awful campaign.

The only surprise was that there was one worse team in the division - Blackpool - who took up last place. That meant that now in each of their 3 relegation seasons Villa had finished not quite bottom of the table in 21st.

Small mercies

 1966-67 Managerial Record

Dick Taylor's third and final season as Villa manager ended in relegation after a 21st placed finish.

Taylor’s Villa had achieved a win rate of 36%, losing 49% of their 146 League and FA Cup matches under his leadership.

As a result Taylor had returned 1.23 points per game* across his 146 games in charge of Villa. Taylor was behind all of his predecessors including Villa’s first professional manager Jimmy McMullan (1.24 in 99) as well as Eric Houghton (1.31 in 250), George Martin (1.42 in 119), Joe Mercer (1.51 in 282), Alex Massie (1.56 in 227) Jimmy Hogan (1.59 in 124), Billy Smith’s 1.62 across 364 games and George Ramsay’s performance of 1.69 across his 1,332 games.

Taylor's leadership broke a number of unwanted records: the highest loss rate recorded (49%), the least goals scored (1.24 per game) and the most goals conceded (2.04 per game) of any manager to take charge of Villa up to 1967.

*Rankings based on 3 points for a win, 1 point for a draw in all competitions
