 1964-65 Season Review

A topsy turvy season from Villa, well more turvy than topsy to be fair. Despite another run in the League Cup to the Semi Finals including a 7 goal thrashing of Bradford, Villa struggled for form throughout. In fact it seemed that the only real form they hit was a run of 4 games losing 1-3.

That would be harsh on Dick Taylor in his first season as Villa manager after replacing Joe Mercer. The last 8 games of the season saw Villa unbeaten and winning 5 which played no small part in securing Villa an improved finish of 16th in Division One.

That plus their third League Cup Semi Final in 5 seasons meant Taylor had begun with a reasonably par season. However it was clear that significantly more was required to lift Villa back up the table and prevent another brush with relegation.
