 1961-62 Season Review

The two-legged final of the 1960-61 League Cup against Rotherham United was held over until this season and played on Tuesday, 22 August 1961 and Tuesday, 5 September 1961. Villa went into the second leg with a two goal deficit but a typical Villa Park night saw Villa hit 3 without reply and lift the inaugural League Cup.

Once back to the 1961-62 season, Joe Mercer's fourth campaign as Villa manager saw his highest league finish to date - 7th.

Mercer's dramatic reduction in the average age of the Villa squad also continued, now being 23.5 years old compared to the 26.7 he inherited.
