 1959-60 Season Review

The Joe Mercer revolution was well under way, as well as the reducing the average age of the Villa squad from 26.7 years old to 25.5, Mercer led Villa to their second successive FA Cup Semi Final and lead the club to promotion from Division Two at the first attempt.

The season was everything the previous decade had not been, 29 wins, 9 draws and just 9 losses, scoring 97 and conceding just 48, hitting an average of 2.06 goals per game and recording their biggest win since 1906 in beating Charlton 11-1.

An unbeaten run of 14 games was crucial to promotion and the securing of the Second Division Championship.

Confidence was high ahead of the new season, Mercer was showing real promise.

 1959-60 Managerial Record

Joe Mercer's first full season as Villa manager saw Villa crowned Second Division Champions, earning promotion and a second successive FA Cup Semi Final appearance.

Mercer's Villa had now achieved a win rate of 52%, losing just 28% of their 75 League and FA Cup matches under his leadership.

As a result Houghton had returned 1.76 points per game* across his 75 games in charge of Villa. That placed Mercer ahead of all of his predecessors including Villa’s first professional manager Jimmy McMullan (1.24 in 99), George Martin (1.42 in 119), Alex Massie (1.56 in 227) Jimmy Hogan (1.59 in 124) as well as George Ramsay’s performance of 1.69 across his 1,332 games and Billy Smith’s 1.62 across 364 games.

*Rankings based on 3 points for a win, 1 point for a draw in all competitions
