 1958-59 Season Review

Villa's biggest defeat in 8 years in game 3 of the season heralded a shocking run of 6 successive defeats, conceding 24 whilst scoring just 8.

Eric Houghton's reign as Villa boss would last just 20 games, losing 12, winning 5 and drawing 3 whilst conceding 53 and scoring 31.

Joe Mercer, was parachuted in to replace the outgoing Houghton, and he took charge of the Villa from 6 December 1958.

Mercer's 28 games brought 10 wins, 12 losses and 8 draws, conceding 38 and scoring 37, but the damage had been done earlier in the season.

Although by season end relegation was confirmed, Mercer had injected some pride, and guided Villa to another FA Cup Semi Final.

Whisper it quietly though, Villa had finished behind Birmingham City for the third time in 4 seasons and the 7th time overall in 60 league campaigns with another sub-Blues finish guaranteed next season as Villa would ply their trade in Division Two.

 1958-59 Managerial Record

Eric Houghton sixth and final season lasted 20 games with the foundation laid for relegation to Division Two.

Houghton’s Villa had achieved a win rate of 35%, losing 39% of their 250 League and FA Cup matches under his leadership.

As a result Houghton had returned 1.31 points per game* across his 250 games in charge of Villa. Despite his trophy win, that placed Houghton ahead of only Villa’s first professional manager Jimmy McMullan (1.24 in 99). Houghton was behind the performances of his predecessors George Martin (1.42 in 119), Alex Massie (1.56 in 227) Jimmy Hogan (1.59 in 124) as well as George Ramsay’s performance of 1.69 across his 1,332 games and Billy Smith’s 1.62 across 364 games.

Houghton's replacement was Joe Mercer whose first task was to oversee Villa's relegation to the second tier for the second time in their history.

Mercer's Villa achieved a win rate of 36%, losing 43% of their first 28 League and FA Cup matches under his leadership.

As a result Houghton had returned 1.29 points per game* across his 28 games in charge of Villa. That placed Mercer ahead of only Villa’s first professional manager Jimmy McMullan (1.24 in 99). Mercer was behind the performances of his predecessors Eric Houghton (1.31 in 250), George Martin (1.42 in 119), Alex Massie (1.56 in 227) Jimmy Hogan (1.59 in 124) as well as George Ramsay’s performance of 1.69 across his 1,332 games and Billy Smith’s 1.62 across 364 games.

*Rankings based on 3 points for a win, 1 point for a draw in all competitions
