 1956-57 Season Review

Villa's first 50 game season.

The opening game of the season provided more positivity than the previous campaign in its seeming entirety. The first 7 games brought just one loss and three wins 4-0, 3-2 and 3-1. Villa were scoring again. They were also conceding however, shipping 5 against Portsmouth and 4 against Spurs, 3 against Preston and 3 versus United. The 22 fixtures in 1956 resulted in 7 wins, 7 draws and 8 losses, scoring 30 and conceding 30. A par start to the season then.

1957 saw Villa's form return fully despite a heavy loss to Spurs once again. An FA Cup third round triumph and a confident 5-1 win over Everton - Villa's first 5 goal haul since April 1954 - heralded a strong run to the season end. 3-2, 4-1, 5-0, 4-0 and most importantly 2-1 in the FA Cup final meant Villa had their first trophy in 37 years and a much better showing in the league for their efforts.

 1956-57 Managerial Record

Eric Houghton fourth season saw a much improved 10th placed finish and 7th FA Cup win for Villa.

Houghton’s Villa had now achieved a win rate of 36%, losing 35% of their 184 League and FA Cup matches under his leadership.

As a result Houghton had returned 1.37 points per game* across his 184 games in charge of Villa. Despite his trophy win, that placed Houghton ahead of only Villa’s first professional manager Jimmy McMullan (1.24 in 99). Houghton was behind the performances of his predecessors George Martin (1.42 in 119), Alex Massie (1.56 in 227) Jimmy Hogan (1.59 in 124) as well as George Ramsay’s performance of 1.69 across his 1,332 games and Billy Smith’s 1.62 across 364 games.

*Rankings based on 3 points for a win, 1 point for a draw in all competitions
