 1953-54 Season Review

Villa's earliest start to the season seemed to catch the club unawares, not only did it open with two losses but despite 2 subsequent wins George Martin was shown the door after four matches.

Admittedly Martin's reign had been uninspiring and Villa's better players were openly questioning the club's ambition (sound familiar?) but the timing was strange having had a summer to act.

Martin's replacement was a Villa stalwart, Eric Houghton, the last time an ex-player had been brought in, Alex Massie, things hadn't worked out too badly and he had certainly performed better than his successor Martin, however it was still somewhat of a move into the unknown. Villa were at a crossroads - no trophy since 1920, experience still fresh that relegation can happen to the biggest names, and an impatient dressing room. Houghton had his work cut out. A trophy and some new Villa idols were needed.

The initial signs were indeed positive with 7 wins from Houghton's first 8 games. That would be as good as the season got however as Villa struggled for form and only added another 9 wins from the subsequent 33 games.

Defeats could be heavy, 0-4, 1-6, 1-5, 0-3 but most of the 18 were by the odd goal. Similarly some good results were posted, 3-0, 4-0, 5-3, 5-1 and 6-1, but others were tight. Matters weren't helped by a third round exit from the FA Cup - the 14th time in 18 seasons that the club had failed to get past the fourth round.

Ultimately Houghton and Villa finished the season further behind Martin's previous effort with a 13th place finish in Division One, suggesting the previous manager might not have been the sole cause of the recent malaise.

There were still some special players at the club though, Harry Parkes, Johnny Dixon, Derek Pace and Stan Lynn. Peter McParland played his first full season and the talent of Danny Blanchflower was still at the club however the team, despite its potential, just didn't blossom in 53-54.

 1953-54 Managerial Record

George Martin's final 4 games as Villa boss were as unexpected as they were sudden.

Martin’s Villa had achieved a win rate of 39%, losing 35% of their 119 League and FA Cup matches under his leadership.

As a result George Martin had returned 1.42 points per game* across his 119 games in charge of Villa. That placed Martin ahead of only Villa’s first professional manager Jimmy McMullan (1.24 in 99) and behind the performances of his predecessors Alex Massie (1.56 in 227) Jimmy Hogan (1.59 in 124) and behind George Ramsay’s 1.69 across his 1,332 games and Billy Smith’s 1.62 across 364 games.

Eric Houghton was appointed as George Martin's replacement and he went on to take Villa to a 13th place finish in his first season.

Houghton's Villa achieved a win rate of 36%, losing 41% of their 39 League and FA Cup matches under his leadership.

As a result Eric Houghton had returned 1.31 points per game* across his 39 games in charge of Villa. That placed Houghton ahead of only Villa’s first professional manager Jimmy McMullan (1.24 in 99) and behind the performances of his predecessors George Martin (1.42 in 119), Alex Massie (1.56 in 227) Jimmy Hogan (1.59 in 124) and behind George Ramsay’s 1.69 across his 1,332 games and Billy Smith’s 1.62 across 364 games.

The change in manager hadn't therefore been an immediate success with Houghton's loss rate being the worst of any Villa manager to date.

*Rankings based on 3 points for a win, 1 point for a draw in all competitions
