 1950-51 Season Review

The season opened without a permanent manager in place following Alex Massie's departure. As a result a management committee was placed in temporary charge as a disorganised and muddled regime failed to prepare properly for the season ahead.

Against all odds however the management committee opened the season with two wins but despite the bright start Villa went on a catastrophic run of 9 games without a win which turned into 1 win in 15 and subsequently 2 wins in 23.

By that time however, George Martin had been appointed as permanent manager but from his debut match in December 1950 through to March 1951 Martin recorded just 1 league win, losing 8 games, including a run of 6 defeats.

Late March however saw an upturn in fortunes with Martin's Villa unbeaten in 9, winning 6 including a resounding 6-2 win to finish off the season.

Overall however the form of the first three quarters of the season meant Villa had to settle for 15th place but with some positive form to potentially take into the following season.

 1950-51 Managerial Record

Following Alex Massie's departure Villa imposed a caretaker management committee ahead of the appointment of a new permanent manager.

Villa under the leadership of the management committee achieved a win rate of just 19%, losing 47% of their 19 League matches.

As a result the management committee returned just 0.95 points per game* across their 19 games in charge of Villa.

George Martin was appointed as permanent manager of Villa and took charge for the final 25 games of the season starting on 2 December 1950.

Martin's Villa achieved a win rate of 36%, losing 32% of their 25 League and FA Cup matches under his leadership.

As a result George Martin had returned 1.40 points per game* across his 25 games in charge of Villa. That placed Martin ahead of only Villa’s first professional manager Jimmy McMullan (1.24 in 99) and behind the performances of his predecessors Alex Massie (1.56 in 227) Jimmy Hogan (1.59 in 124) and behind George Ramsay’s 1.69 across his 1,332 games and Billy Smith’s 1.62 across 364 games.

*Rankings based on 3 points for a win, 1 point for a draw in all competitions
