 1945-46 Season Review

Villa's longest season to date - 50 games - came against a backdrop of a unique campaign structure.

As the first season following the resumption of football following WW2 the readiness for a full, traditional league campaign was limited and so an interim regional league was implemented together with the FA Cup in a revised two-legged format.

It was all change at Villa too with Jimmy Hogan unable to retake the reins after his successful pre war spell. Alex Massie took on the manager role and was indeed the first and only player manager of Villa.

Games throughout the season tended to be back to back against the same opposition on subsequent weekends with the FA Cup ties being played on a Saturday / Monday two-legged basis. That threw up a lot of football and varied results. Strong wins were a feature throughout the season, 7-1. 6-3, 5-1, 4-0, 3-0, 5-2, 4-0, 9-1, 5-1. 5-3, 4-1, 3-0, however there were also some heavy, but entertaining defeats, notably 4-5 and 3-4.

As a result goalscoring records were a feature with George Edwards hitting 43, ably supported by Frank Broome (20) and Bob Iverson (18).

It was an entertaining and welcome return to professional football for all concerned and Villa clinched 2nd place, missing out on the title on goal ratio ahead of the resumption of league football proper in 1946-47.

 1945-46 Managerial Record

Alex Massie's first season as manager saw Villa clinch the second place in the interim regional league following the resumption of professional football after WW2.

Massie's Villa had achieved a win rate of 60%, losing just 16% of their 50 League and FA Cup matches under his leadership.

As a result Alex Massie had returned 2.04 points per game* across his 50 games in charge of Villa, ahead of his predecessor Jimmy Hogan (1.59) and even ahead of George Ramsay’s 1.69 across his 1,332 games and Billy Smith’s 1.62 across 364 games. Massie was also far ahead of Villa's first professional manager Jimmy McMullan (1.24 in 99) however some of the opposition faced by Massie's Villa during his debut season was of a lower than normal quality.

*Rankings based on 3 points for a win, 1 point for a draw in all competitions
