The 1945-46 League season took place as an interim arrangement ahead of the full commencement of League football proper in 1946-47.

For 1945-46 the top two divisions as decided at the end of the 1938-39 campaign - including relevant promotions and relegations - were split into broadly regional leagues to enable the transition back to football. This included the use of guest players as had become the norm during wartime football.

The Football League South division was made up of eight top tier clubs, including Villa, and fourteen second tier sides including one, Newport County, who had spent 1938-39 in the third tier before earning promotion at the end of the campaign.

For the purposes of statistical records, whilst the League games of 1945-46 are recorded in AVFC History as official games involving the Villa first team, individual player appearances or goals are not accumulated under the interim format given the disparity in competitiveness within the League.

As a result, any players who made their sole appearances for Villa in the interim League competition are recognised as players but their appearances are not.

However, where any appearances and goals were accumulated under the double header FA Cup - an officially sanctioned and competitive competition - these are recognised in their entirety as if the season were an entirely normal one.
