 1938-39 Season Review

Villa's return to the top flight carried on from where they left off with a fifth win in a row and despite two subsequent losses the newcomers won 4 of their opening 9 games, scoring 15 and conceding 9. The honeymoon however wouldn't last as a run of 5 successive defeats through November dented the return as Villa scored just twice but conceded 13.

Villa recovered however and  through to the Boxing Day fixture against Sunderland at Roker Park won 5 of 7 including impressive 6-2 and 5-1 wins. The results through January however were patchy with 2 wins, 3 losses and 2 draws.

That hiccup however presaged a 10 game run, losing just once and winning 6, scoring 24 and conceding just 7. As a result Villa's return to the top flight looked in April like it would end in a string top 10 finish, that however was to prove premature as form fell away and 7 games without a win to the end of the season including 5 losses meant Villa had to settle for a 12th place finish.

Sadly, 1938-39 would prove Jimmy Hogan's last season as Villa boss as the breakout of WW2 and the suspension of league and FA Cup football cut short both careers and tragically lives.

The world, the league and Villa would look very different on its return 7 long years later.

 1938-39 Managerial Record

Jimmy Hogan’s final season as manager before league football was suspended due to WW2 saw Villa line up in Division One under his leadership for the first time.

Hogan’s Villa had achieved a win rate of 46%, losing just 33% of their 124 League and FA Cup matches under his leadership.

As a result Jimmy Hogan had now returned 1.59 points per game* across his 124 games in charge of Villa, significantly ahead of his predecessor Jimmy McMullan (1.24) but behind George Ramsay’s 1.69 across his 1,332 games and Billy Smith’s 1.62 across 364 games.

*Rankings based on 3 points for a win, 1 point for a draw in all competitions
