 1937-38 Season Review

It was to be Villa's longest season to date - 49 games.

Villa under manager Jimmy Hogan stopped the rot of the awful 6 game run of defeats run to the end of the 1936-37 season with an opening day win and went on to record 8 victories in the first 15 games and losing just 3 however the score-lines were conservative and it would not be until December that a team - Stockport County - was truly put to the sword.

That result triggered Villa's championship winning run as they stacked up a series of positive results that drove them on to the second division title and a return to Division One after 2 seasons away.

Jimmy Hogan's Villa went on a 8 game unbeaten run, winning seven, scoring 24 and conceding just 5. Over that period Villa also made it through the FA Cup Third Round for the first time in 4 seasons and went on to feature in their first semi final since 1934.

Villa lost in the league in late January but recovered to register another unbeaten run, this time 7 games, winning 4, scoring 16 and conceding 8.

Thereafter Villa posted regular wins but they were punctuated by defeats on an almost win one lose one basis. A four game winning run to the end of the season saw Villa promoted and finishing the latest campaign in total contrast to the disappointment of the previous year.

The jury on Jimmy Hogan was no longer out, he was the mastermind of promotion and a return to scoring form for Villa, the top flight beckoned.

 1937-38 Managerial Record

Jimmy Hogan’s first full season as manager saw Villa clinch the Second Division Title and regain promotion to Division One.

Hogan's Villa had achieved a win rate of 51%, losing just 29% of their 79 League and FA Cup matches under his leadership.

As a result Jimmy Hogan had now returned 1.72 points per game* across his two seasons in charge of Villa, ahead of his predecessor Jimmy McMullan (1.24) and even now ahead of George Ramsay’s 1.69 across his 1,332 games and Billy Smith’s 1.62 across 364 games.

At the end of his second season in charge Jimmy Hogan was the most successful* manager in Villa's history.

*Rankings based on 3 points for a win, 1 point for a draw in all competitions
