 1936-37 Season Review

Villa's first season outside the top flight of league football saw manager Jimmy McMullan take the reins once again and unlike the previous season his initial results provided a strong and positive start to life in Division Two and suggested an immediate return to the Division One was possible. Indeed his first six games proved his strongest run as Villa boss with 4 wins in an unbeaten run and a positive goal difference (15 scored, 5 conceded).

As had been a feature of his reign to date however the form fell away dramatically and he only recorded just a single win in the next 7 matches, losing 3, and being relieved of his duties after just 13 games.

Jimmy Hogan took over as Villa boss and enjoyed an initial bounce with 3 draws and win, his next four games however brought 3 losses and a solitary win before 2 wins and 2 draws across the new year brought some respite.

It was short lived however with 3 losses, including yet another exit of the FA Cup at the 3rd Round, in the next four games before finally, for the first time in 3 seasons Villa hit an extended patch of good form with 7 wins in 8 unbeaten. scoring 27 and conceding 11.

It then fell apart in the most startling of fashions with a run of 6 consecutive defeats - equalling Villa's worst ever record set in 1902-03.

Ultimately Villa placed 9th in the second tier with no chance of promotion.

The jury too was out on Jimmy Hogan.

 1936-37 Managerial Record

Jimmy McMullan’s third and final season as Villa manager leading Villa’s first ever campaign outside of the top flight lasted just 13 games.

McMullan’s Villa had achieved a win rate of just 32%, losing 40% of their 99 League and FA Cup matches under his leadership.

In total Jimmy McMullan had returned just 1.24 points per game* across his 99 games in charge of Villa compared to George Ramsay’s 1.69 across his 1,332 games and Billy Smith’s 1.62 across 364 games.

McMullan’s replacement Jimmy Hogan achieved an improved win rate of 37% but again lost 40% of his first 30 games.

As a result Jimmy Hogan returned 1.33 points per game* in his first season in charge of Villa, ahead of his predecessor but well behind George Ramsay’s 1.69 across his 1,332 games and Billy Smith’s 1.62 across 364 games.

At this point the move away from the traditional management committee structure looked like a failed and flawed experiment.

*Rankings based on 3 points for a win, 1 point for a draw in all competitions
