 1935-36 Season Review

Even 80 years later it can't be sugar-coated, the appointment of Villa's first professional manager, Jimmy McMullan, had been an unmitigated disaster.

The 13th place finish of the previous season was eclipsed in its disappointment by a 21st place finish and Villa's first ever relegation.

Conceding 111 goals, winning just 30% of fixtures and only keeping 3 clean sheets - Villa had never experienced anything like this in their history.

The season was littered by some of the heaviest defeats imaginable, Villa weren't losing by the odd goal, indeed home defeats of 0-7 (the worst in the club's history, 1-7, 2-7, 2-6 illustrated the remarkable fall from grace that the club suffered under McMullan.

Away results were little better, 0-5, 0-3, 1-5, 1-4, 2-5,

Across the first 20 games of the season Villa won just twice, scoring 33 and conceding 64.

The turn of the year saw some improvement with 4 wins in 10, scoring 20 and conceding 21 but the damage had been done earlier in the season and despite wins matching losses to the end of the season (5) and a positive goal difference (28 scored, 26 conceded) Villa finished 21st of 22 teams in Division One.

This famous club with 6 FA Cups and 6 League Titles would play in the second tier of English football for the first time in the 1936-37 season.

The only bright spot of the season was Villa's remarkable attendance figures - averaging 41,852 across the season.
