 1934-35 Season Review

The season opened with defeat in a local derby and didn't really recover.

Villa had performed below expectation in the previous campaign - Billy Smith's last - and his replacement, and Villa's first ever professional manager, Jimmy McMullan fared little better, finishing in 13th place as had his predecessor in 1933-34. Indeed there were also echoes even further back when Smith had originally  taken over the reigns from Villa legend George Ramsey and what would now be described as a club 'in transition'.

As with the previous season defeats featured throughout the season however now, for the first time, Villa were seeing extended runs of losses and significant periods without wins. Goals were proving much harder to come by than in Smith's pomp and Villa failed to hit at least 6 in a game for many seasons. That said there were some strong wins - 5-0, 4-0, 5-4. 4-1. 4-2 but there were also unpleasantly resounding defeats - 0-5, 2-5, 1-5, 1-4, 1-4, 0-3, 1-4, 0-3, and 0-5.

As a result the initial campaign under McMillan wasn't a huge success and Villa finished outside of the top 10 for only the second time in 10 seasons.
