 1926-27 Season Review

Billy Smith's first season as leader of the Villa management committee structure. Smith replaced George Ramsay following the end of his remarkable 38 season reign however his debut season couldn't have begin more poorly. His first 10 games saw just 2 wins and 6 defeats. The second 10 saw improvement with 5 wins and just 3 defeats but another 4 defeats, including a first round FA Cup exit meant Villa's season didn't take off until early 1927. Villa ultimately achieved a 10th place finish in Division One courtesy of a strong run through to March however yet another loss of form stifled the comeback. Off the pitch the average age of the Villa squad was growing considerably from 24 years old in Ramsay's penultimate season to 27 in Smith's debut campaign.
