 1897-98 Season Notes

Villa finished outside of the top four for the first time in seven seasons and exited the FA Cup in the 1st Round. Villa had lost Jack Reynolds and Johnny Campbell to Glasgow Celtic at the end of their double winning season the previous campaign and were unable overcome their departure. Villa scored just 61 goals, compared to 90 the previous season, won 14 league fixtures compared to 21, and kept just 5 clean sheets compared to 12.

Despite the relative downturn on the pitch, Villa’s average league attendance for the 1897-98 season of 16,323 was the highest in the history of the football league whilst a youngster named Billy Garraty and a goalkeeper named Billy George made their debuts.
