Villa played in their second FA Cup Final both of which were against West Bromwich Albion, sadly however Villa were not able to secure a second victory  in succession against that opposition.

Goalkeeper Jimmy Warner played his final game for Villa aged 26 before moving on to Newton Heath. Jimmy had kept goal for villa on 101 occasions conceding at a rate of 2.14 goals per game

The Story of the FA Cup 1891/92

Match Report
Villa, the ascendant team in league football were clear favourites ahead of the match and extra spice was added after Villa’s victory over the same opposition in 1886-87.

Indeed such was the expectation surrounding Villa that the defeat they were to suffer on this spring afternoon would live long in the memory as the most controversial of games involving a player whose career would never recover.

After an injury curtailed season, goalkeeper Jimmy Warner regained his position to feature in the FA Cup Final again versus West Bromwich Albion however his experience was very different from the one he had in 1886/87.

In the game itself, Jimmy Warner and Dennis Hodgetts would be the only survivors of that 1886-87 victory and despite West Brom carrying more players from that fixture, it was Villa who were the superior team from kick off yet by the time 27 minutes were on the clock Villa were 2-0 down and heading for an infamous defeat.

The first blow came on 4 minutes with a stinging volley that left Villa keeper Jimmy Warner with no chance to save, yet Villa shrugged the setback off and continued as the more composed side, making events of the 27th minute all the more surprising.

Another break by West Brom saw a tame shot beat Warner in the Villa goal.

Villa’s ascendancy had been undone by a failure to finish, one unstoppable shot and a clear goalkeeping error. Yet Jimmy still pulled off two crucial saves to keep the score at 0-2 before the half time whistle came.

For the 2nd half, and for reasons still unclear, the Villa came out as a pale imitation of themselves and effectively played the game out without troubling West Brom, it was therefore little surprise that West Brom added a 3rd, what was shocking was that it was the 2nd goal of the game that Warner had let in far too easily for a keeper of his excellence, reputation and experience.

The whirlwind of criticism and rumours swirled around Jimmy Warner almost as soon as the 3rd goal went in.

With hindsight and a mind for conspiracy a picture was pieced together that suggested that Jimmy Warner was guilty of throwing the FA Cup final for money reasons.

Hindsight said that suspicions had been aroused prior to the final when Warner apparently excused himself from training and was allegedly seen in the company of a ‘shady’ gentleman to whom it has been claimed Warner owed money having lost a significant amount of money on a previous bet. In return for this debt it was alleged Warner agreed to ‘throw’ the final in the favour of West Brom.

During the match Warner:

Helped Geddes shot find the back of the net: 0-1. However many believed that this was a shot that no keeper could have realistically saved.

Fumbled a straightforward save for Sam Nicholls to score: 0-2. Guilty as charged.

Stood out of position to allow John Reynold’s long range shot to hit the net: 3-0. A situation so out of character for a keeper of Jimmy Warner’s standing that this goal alone set alight the conspiracy fervour.

The immediate impact was that Jimmy Warner was deemed guilty and never played for Villa again and he was transferred to Newton Heath (Manchester United) in July 1892.

That was a great loss to Villa yet the real tragedy laid with Jimmy, transferred to a club that wasn’t ‘his’, this proud Villa boy just couldn’t motivate himself to play elsewhere and soon drifted away from the game haunted by the accusations.

Such was Jimmy’s turmoil that he, along with his daughter, left England and moved to the US, settling in Philadelphia.

One other footnote from the game is that of Jack Reynolds, a West Brom player with eyes elsewhere. Jack was accused by his club of putting in a performance of such quality in the final only to earn himself a move to Villa. The West Brom board went so far as to fine their player each week until they were satisfied he was playing at that same level, a move as bizarre as it was self defeating. Unsurprisingly Villa stepped in and gave Jack the career he wanted with him going on to become a bona fide Villa legend with a packed trophy cabinet.

A lost opportunity, a destroyed career and a Villa legend recruited, on balance it was a funny old game on Saturday, 19 March 1892.

Warner never played for Villa again and was transferred to Newton Heath (Manchester United) in July 1892.
