Match Report
An unexceptional final in which Villa played on the counter, it took a tactical change to bring the game into Villa’s grasp with forward Archie Hunter moving into a deeper role in order to support forwards Richmond Davis and Dennis Hodgetts.

The change proved a masterstroke and it was Archie in the 60th minute who released Dennis Hodgetts to advance on the keeper from the wing and plant the ball past Bob Roberts in the West Brom goal.

West Brom held up play for 3 minutes as gentlemanly conduct flew out of the proverbial window, once order was restored, referee Marindin confirmed his decision - something he was to stand by in the decades to come. West Brom however carried their animosity to the referee and to Villa forward from that day onwards despite all evidence, including witnesses in the crowd confirming that the referee had made the correct call.

West Brom’s questionable reaction and lack of sportsmanship simply inspired Villa to better heights in the game and left the opposition defence in panic for much of the remainder of the game. Such was that nervousness that a back pass was pounced on by Villa captain Archie Hunter who met ball and the on-rushing goalkeeper year remained composed and steered the ball into the net for 2-0.

Villa’s first FA Cup win was in the bag.
