MATCHDAY QUOTES

"On resuming after the interval the Villa made a warm onslaught on the home goal but Kay was in splendid trim. Burnley had a fruitless free kick right in front of the goal."

*Birmingham Daily Post*
Monday, 22 September 1890

BURNLEY v. ASTON VILLA.

Played at Burnley, before 8,000 spectators. Both sides were fully represented. Burnley won the toss, and, playing uphill with the wind, opened a strong attack on the Villa goal.

Warner saved an excellent shot at the expense of a corner, and fisted out further shots from Mardie and Lambie.

Aston Villa now put in some vigorous forward play, and Marshall sent in a stinging shot. Campbell also gave Kay a beauty to negotiate.

Free kicks fell to Burnley in front of the goal, but the Villa defence was excellent, and the visitors, with a fine rush, just missed scoring.

Burnley forged ahead, and Lambie scored out of the scrimmage twenty-eight minutes from the start.

After this the visitors pressed severely, and on several occasions had the hardest lines in not scoring.

Kay, the Burnley custodian, and Warner were found plenty to do.

Half-time: Burnley 1, Villa 0.

On resuming after the interval the Villa made a warm onslaught on the home goal but Kay was in splendid trim. Burnley had a fruitless free kick right in front of the goal.

Result: Burnley, 2 goals; Aston Villa, 1.
