"Steve Harkness [in the Liverpool game] called me a coon. There were other things being said worse than that.
“I will not accept the kind of racist stuff I had to endure. It was out of order and hurt me."
“Stan Collymore.”
*The Irish Independent*
Monday, 9 March 1998
JULIAN JOACHIM eased Aston Villa's relegation worries with his fifth goal of the season as Chelsea suffered another European hangover at Stamford Bridge which severely dented their hopes of qualifying for next season's Champions' League.
Joachim, whose previous four goals had all come as a substitute was given a starting role in the absence of injured Stan Collymore, and he put the memories of his midweek miss against Atletico Madrid behind him as he coolly slotted the ball past Chelsea 'keeper Ed de Goey after 50 minutes.
Yesterday's victory lifts Villa above Newcastle to 13th place, 11 points clear of the relegation zone.
While new Villa boss John Gregory now has a 100% Premiership record since taking charge, the top flight's other new recruit, Gianluca Vialli, has lost all three league games while in the hot seat.
